Aboriginal Lands & Traditional Custodians
We travel through lands that have been cared for by First Nations people for thousands of years, long before the roads and cities came. From Meanjin (Brisbane) through to the Cairns region, we pass through many Traditional Custodians’ territories — each with their own languages, culture, and deep connection to the land.
Brisbane (Meanjin) is on the lands of the Turrbal people, whose traditional name for Brisbane is Meanjin, meaning “place of the blue water lilies.”
As we move north, we pass through land of many Aboriginal groups including (but not limited to) the Yuggera, Yugambeh, Kabi Kabi, Yirrganydji and Yidinji peoples, among others.
The Cairns region is on the land of the Yidinji people, including the Gimuy‐Walubarra clan, as well as other Traditional Owner groups.
The Traditional Custodians of these lands have always ensured that Country is respected — through caring for the water, the plants, the animals, and sharing stories that tie people to place. When you travel with us, you’re walking through ancient country where culture lives on.
10 cent cans
10 cent cans
On every trip, we make a difference together.
All the cans and bottles we use are collected and cashed in (10 cents each), with all of the money donated directly to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. To double the impact, Adventure Mates matches the amount we raise.
So if we collect $50 worth of cans and bottles, we top it up to $100 and donate it straight to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. They run many important programs aimed at protecting and restoring the reef, and the work they do is vital to keeping this natural wonder alive for future generations.
